Carlton Works, London SE15
Peckham's proximity to Goldsmiths College and Camberwell School of Art has attracted a thriving cultural community of artists, architects and designers. The area around Carlton Works Studios also boasts a thriving cafe society, cutting edge architecture and a series of centuries old street markets (the infamous organic Borough Market isn’t far away either). Art galleries such as acclaimed South London Fine Art Gallery, bookshops, upmarket bistros, an interior design shop and an architectural salvage shop are transforming this area of London. ‘Street Furniture’ by fashion designer Zandra Rhodes and artist Tom Phillips as well as Will Alsop's award-winning Peckham Library are just some of the keynote attractions of the area in and around Carlton Works Studios. A rewarding mix of old and new can also be found in Peckham with residents whose families have lived there for generations mixing happily with recent newcomers. Much of the existing character of the Carlton Works Studio building has been maintained by retaining and exposing many of the Victorian warehouse features. Huge windows, high ceilings, exposed brickwork and columns, along with original floorboards combine to create an atmosphere of bright, urban sophistication. The flats make the perfect flexible live/work spaces. The original features are contrasted by the clean lines and high tech fittings of the conversion. High quality materials and a tasteful neutral interior make for a unique sense of unpretentious luxury. |
